Physics history 101. German physicist Albert Einstein published an article in the ‘Anallen der Physik’ on September 27, 1905, which would form the basis for the most famous equation in history. He theorized that there is a direct link between the mass of an object and the potential energy contained within it. Therefore, the energy (e) of an object is equal to its mass (m), multiplied by a constant of proportionality squared (c2), or, e=mc2. This formula was crucial in the development of the atomic bomb and also in Einstein’s own theory of relativity. The atomic bomb went on to create one of the greatest war-time atrocities of all time. The theory of relativity went on to baffle conventional physicists the world over. It is theorized that if Albert Einstein were alive today, he would be somewhat disappointed in what has become of his famous equation. Although, he would probably be quite fond of the internet and reality TV.
